"verbatimText": "THIS COMMUNICATION IS SENT ON BEHALF OF THE INTERIM VICE PRESIDENT FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AND CHIEF OF POLICE, HUGH CLEMENTS\n\nEarlier today, a physical altercation occurred off-campus near the intersection of Thayer and Angell Street. While this event took place on a commercial portion of Thayer Street outside of University property, we understand that visible police activity near our campus can cause concern, and we wish to provide accurate information to put our community at ease.\n\nAt approximately 3:30 pm, the Providence Police responded to a dispute between two individuals, neither of whom is affiliated with the University. During the altercation, one individual brandished a knife and assaulted the victim, who was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury. Providence Police acted quickly to apprehend the other individual involved, who was taken into custody and charged accordingly.\n\nProvidence police and the Brown Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management (DPSEM) have determined that this was an isolated dispute between two individuals and there is no ongoing threat to the campus or the general public. No Brown students, faculty, or staff were involved in the incident.\n\nBrown DPSEM remains in close communication with local law enforcement to monitor the area. Our officers continue to conduct regular patrols on and around campus to ensure a safe environment for our students, staff, and visitors. As we do for all incidents occurring near our community, we will continue to work collaboratively with our local partners to ensure the continued safety of the neighborhood.\n\nAs a reminder, any member of the Brown community can request support or report suspicious activity to Brown DPSEM at 401-863-3322 or the Providence Police Department at 401-272-3121. For any emergency, dial 911.\n\nMembers of the community may also use the RAVE Brown Guardian app, which allows users to send a personal safety alert directly to Brown's Department of Public Safety and enables GPS location sharing so officers can respond quickly if assistance is needed.",
