"verbatimText": "FSU Police Dept: Increase in spiked beverages\n\nFriday, October 20, 2023\n\nThe Florida State University Police Department has received information that there has been an increase in spiked beverages on or around campus locations.\n\nDrink spiking is when an offender adds a scentless, colorless, and tasteless drug in the drink or on the drink container of an unsuspecting victim. The effects of the spiking can vary for each person. Symptoms can range from loss of balance, visual impairment, confusion, or nausea. In some cases, the victim could lose consciousness.\n\nThe Florida State University Police Department would like to remind all community members of the following ways to safeguard yourself and others from drink spiking.\n\nSafety Tips When Going Out:\n\n• Be aware of drinks in punch bowls or other containers that can be easily \"spiked\" (when alcohol or another drug is added to a drink without permission).\n\n• Don't accept drinks from other people. If someone offers to get you a drink from a bar or at a party, go with the person to order your drink. Watch your drink as it is poured and carry it yourself.\n\n• Open your drink yourself. Keep control of it at all times.\n\n• Signs that a drink has been spiked are a change in taste, smell or color; foggy or cloudy appearance; excessive bubbles; or sinking ice. If you notice any of these signs, do not drink your drink.\n\n• Drugs can be placed on the outside of closed cans and bottles. If you accept a drink, wipe off any drink container whether it is open or closed.\n\n• Don't drink more than you want to just because someone else wants you to. Don't drink more than you want to so that someone else will like you or be impressed.\n\n• Get help right away if you feel drunk and haven't had any alcohol or if you feel like the effects of drinking alcohol are stronger than usual. Find a friend who can help you get to a safe place.\n\n• Look out for your friends and ask them to look out for you. You can play a powerful role in helping other people stay safe. If a friend seems out of it, seems much too drunk for the amount of alcohol they drank, is acting out of character, or seems too drunk to stay safe in general, get them to a safe place. Ask your friends to do the same for you.\n\n• Get support even if you can't remember exactly what happened. Some substances used in drink spiking can cause short-term memory loss, are odorless, colorless and tasteless, or can be hard to see if your drink is dark.\n\nDrink Spiking Symptoms:\n\n• Feeling drunk, woozy or drowsy\n\n• Feeling \"out of it\" or drunker than expected\n\n• Mental confusion\n\n• Speech difficulties (such as slurring)\n\n• Memory loss\n\n• Loss of inhibitions\n\n• Nausea and vomiting\n\n• Breathing problems\n\n• Muscle spasms or seizures\n\n• Lowered body temperature and blood pressure\n\n• Loss of consciousness\n\n• An unusually long hangover\n\n• A severe hangover when you had little or no alcohol to drink\n\nThe Florida State University Police Department is available to assist any member of the University community in an emergency. If you feel you have been a victim of drink spiking and you need immediate assistance, call 9-1-1 or FSUPD at 850-644-1234.\n\nIn addition, there are numerous resources both on and off campus to assist the FSU community. For more information on Drink Spiking Prevention, please visit the FSU Department of Student Support and Transitions Drink Spiking Prevention at https://dsst.fsu.edu/resources/drink-spiking-prevention.\n\nOnline reporting at: https://report.fsu.edu/\n\nVictim Advocate Program\n\nCall 24/7 850-644-7101\n\nUniversity Health Services\n\n850-644-8871\n\nTALLAHASSEE",
