      "verbatimText": "Subject: Safety Notice – Sexual Extortion Offense: Sexual Extortion Date: December 6, 2022\n\nContent Warning: This notice includes information of extortion, abuse, and nonconsensual distribution of sexual and intimate images.\n\nThe Tulane University Police department has received reports from several students who have been victims of possible sexual extortion. Victims have reported chatting via social media with an unknown individual or individuals. After a series of messages, including those of an intimate or sexual nature, the unknown perpetrator has demanded money to prevent the distribution of the victims’ intimate photographs.\n\nSharing or threatening to share nude or intimate images or videos, without an individual’s consent is illegal.\n\nSexual extortion, or sextortion, is a serious form of image-based sexual abuse. This crime can include online blackmail where a perpetrator threatens to reveal explicit images of a victim unless they give in to the perpetrator’s demands.\n\nPlease Remember These Safety Tips: • If you’re being blackmailed over intimate photographs or messages, for money or something else, do NOT send any funds and cease all contact with the blackmailer. • If you are the victim of blackmailing or extortion, immediately block the person’s number, profile, or email address and contact police. • Be mindful of your online activity and who you are chatting with via social media, image or video sharing apps and instant messaging. Avoid unknown random ‘friend’ or ‘follower’ requests. • Collect as much evidence as you can including screenshots, URL’s, usernames or any other records to make a report to police.
