      "verbatimText": "Campus Safety wants community members to be aware that UI Police responded to an animal bite report on the west side of campus on Monday, May 20. The victim told police she was walking along the Mormon Handcart Trail, 116 Hawkeye Court, at approximately 4 p.m. when she felt something biting her ankle. The victim then turned around and discovered it looked like a coyote. The animal lunged at the victim and began to bite and scratch, causing injuries.\n\nUI Police searched the area and were unable to locate the animal. Police have also consulted with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources who shared that coyote attacks are uncommon in the state of Iowa.\n\nRabies is fast acting and fatal in humans if left untreated. If a potentially rabid animal bites, scratches, or makes physical contact with you, Iowa City Animal Services recommends seeking professional medical attention immediately to ensure there is no infection and filing a bite report with Animal Services or your local law enforcement agency.\n\nMore Safety Tips\n\nIf you witness something that is a threat to public safety or an individual, you are strongly encouraged to report it to UI Police as soon as possible.
