      "verbatimText": "UNC Police are investigating the theft of several credit cards from different medical research buildings on south campus, including MacNider Hall, Beard Hall, the Bioinformatics Building and the Genetic Medicine Research Building. The thefts occurred between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4. The credit cards were taken from unsecured offices and cubicles throughout the buildings.\n\nThis investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should contact UNC Police at 919-962-8100. Also, anyone seeing any suspicious activity anywhere on campus is reminded to call 9-1-1 immediately.\n\nTips to enhance security in your work environment:\n\nPut away your valuables. Don’t leave them visible.\n\nEnsure that all doors, desks, and windows are locked if you leave and take your keys with you. Do not prop open doors.\n\nFamiliarize yourself with your department’s security systems and procedures.\n\nKeep a record of all keys you have been issued. Master keys and extra duplicates should be locked away for safekeeping.\n\nDo not admit strangers into your residence hall or place of work.\n\nDo not leave coats or other valuable items in common areas or where they are visible.\n\nAsk strangers to wait in common areas while their friends are summoned.\n\nPack up and carry your laptop with you wherever you go, even the bathroom.\n\nReport any suspicious persons or behaviors to UNC Police immediately. The following are examples of behaviors that could be considered suspicious:\n\nA person or persons you, or other employees/students, do not recognize going from office to office or room to room\n\nA person or persons standing in a hallway for a long period of time\n\nA person or persons waiting outside of the building near the time that the building will be closing\n\nMaintain an inventory of all office equipment; include the make, model and serial number of each item. Keep this inventory in a safe place. Keep it current by adding the identification numbers of all new equipment.\n\nIf you come home to find an unexplained open/broken window or door:\n\nDo not enter – the perpetrator may still be inside.\n\nContact the police department immediately.\n\nWrite down the license plate numbers of any suspicious vehicles.\n\nFor more safety tips, see the following link: https://campussafety.unc.edu/carolinasafe/tips/.",
