"verbatimText": "Carolina Alert: \r\n \r\nIn-person classes, workshops and tutoring sessions scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31 on the University of South Carolina's Columbia campus will be moved online due to expected snow accumulation throughout the Midlands region this weekend.\r\n \r\nSnow, wind and below freezing temperatures are expected to begin Saturday morning and continue throughout Sunday evening. Several inches of snow accumulation is likely during this winter weather event. \r\n \r\nExcept for Saturday's men's basketball game (https://gamecocksonline.com/news/2026/01/29/saturdays-game-versus-lsu-moved-up-to-1-p-m-et/) all other on-campus events planned for Saturday are canceled or delayed until a later date. Essential food service will be available during the weather event. Recreation centers (https://sc.edu/about/offices_and_divisions/campus_recreation/), the Thomas Cooper Library (https://sc.edu/about/offices_and_divisions/university_libraries/about/locations/tcl/), the Center for Health and Well-Being (https://sc.edu/about/offices_and_divisions/student-health-well-being/medical-services/), and the Russell House (https://sc.edu/about/offices_and_divisions/russell_house/) will operate under modified hours. Please check the respective websites for updates on hours.\r\n \r\nEveryone is reminded to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during snow and below-freezing temperatures, as the roadways may become icy. Please obey all signage and public safety directives concerning travel. \r\n \r\nCrossing bridges and elevated roads can be especially hazardous because ice accumulates much faster than on normal roads and sidewalks. Snow events in central South Carolina are rare, so roadways may take longer to recover because snowplows and salt treatments are typically not available. \r\n \r\nUSC employees designated as essential personnel should check with their supervisor as soon as possible if they are unsure of their status or responsibilities during a campus closure or delayed opening. \r\n \r\nPlease note: all campus closure determinations for state agencies within Richland County are made by the Office of the Governor. \r\n \r\nUSC will send updates if there are changes to the campus schedules and operations. In the meantime, please monitor email, sc.edu/weather, USC's social media at x.com/uofsc, and the Carolina Alert website at sc.edu/carolinaalert for updates.",
