June 30, 2021 Security Bulletin 06/30/21: Home Invasion in Off-Campus Neighborhood The Ann Arbor Police Department is investigating a home invasion that occurred at an off-campus home on South State Street on June 27, 2021, sometime between midnight and 4:30 a.m. On June 29, a resident of a home on S. State St. notified AAPD regarding items missing from their home. One of the residents stated that while they were sleeping sometime between midnight and 4:30 a.m. on June 27, an unknown person entered a bedroom and turned on the light. Thinking it was another resident of the home, they went back to sleep. Items were later discovered missing. It is believed entry was gained through an unlocked door. If you have information, please contact the Ann Arbor Police Department Tip Line (734) 794-6939 or tips@a2gov.org. Regardless of whether you’re living on or off the University of Michigan campus, everyone should take a proactive approach to secure their residence. DPSS strongly encourages you to: Keep your windows and doors locked Turn on exterior lights at night Close blinds at night and keep doorwall security bars in place Store valuables out of plain sight Do not prop open exterior doors Do not hold open exterior doors for people you do not know Know who is at your front door before you open it When you take a vacation, put a temporary hold on your mail and other deliveriesReport any suspicious behavior or incidents

How the first alert is built

To check this alert, Claude (an AI) read it in full 25 separate times, independently. Each read decided whether the message answers each of the six questions and gave a short reason. A final reviewer then weighed all 25 and wrote the plain-English verdict you see when you open a row. The score (for example 22/25) is how many reads agreed; the 25 individual reads are tucked underneath if you want to check them.

Who is sending the alert and who is responding. People act faster on a message from a clearly identifiable, credible sender, such as a named department, the police, or a branded alert system, than on an anonymous notice. A branded signature counts.

What the threat actually is. A complete warning names the specific danger, such as a shooter, a fire, a tornado, or a gas leak, rather than a vague emergency, because people decide what to do based on what they are facing.

Where the threat is. Saying whether danger is in a specific building, a part of campus, or area-wide lets people judge their own proximity and choose a safe direction. Without a where, a warning is hard to act on precisely.

The protective action to take. A clear, specific instruction, such as shelter in place, evacuate, avoid the area, or run-hide-fight, drives faster and more correct protective behavior than describing the threat alone.

    Final assessment

All 25 reads find i present.

What the hazard could do to the people in its path. Beyond naming the threat, a complete warning conveys its potential consequences or severity, such as that a tornado can level buildings or that a leak could be explosive, so recipients grasp how much danger they are in. Research on warning message content finds that a concrete impact statement helps people personalize their risk and act sooner.
