How this policy works
- When it activates
- Emergency Notification for immediate or imminent threats (examples include extreme weather/tornado, chemical release, fire, serious illness outbreak, armed intruder, bomb/terrorist threat, civil unrest). Timely Warnings for Clery crimes on Clery geography that pose potential ongoing or serious threat after DCDPS identifies the report.
- Who decides
- VP of Business and Finance authorizes Emergency Notifications and communicates authorization to the Director of Public Safety; Director may immediately distribute without prior approval when judgment requires no delay, with later cancel/retract by VP. Timely warnings evaluated, drafted, and distributed by Director of Public Safety and VP Business and Finance or designees (with Title IX when applicable).
- Timeliness standard
- Without unnecessary delay for EN unless professional judgment finds compromise of victim assistance or mitigation; Director may bypass approval delay when immediate distribution is required.
- Emergency notification vs. timely warning
- ASR separates Timely Warning (crimes already occurred, ongoing threat) from Emergency Notification (immediate/imminent threat) with DCDPS geography and Clery crime framing.
- Testing cadence
- Not fully extracted in the Timely Warning / EN sections reviewed; see full ASR for drill/testing details.
- Scope & limits
- May target segments of the campus community; message may include nature, location/date/time, suspect description, recommended actions, and DCDPS contact number.
