Timely Warnings, Immediate Notifications, and UMW Alerts (2025 ASR)

At times it may be necessary for "timely warnings" to be issued to the University community. If a crime occurs and notification is necessary to warn the University community of a potentially dangerous situation, the UMW Police Department will initiate the warning process. The Police Department will contact the Office of University Communications to prepare a release and the information will be sent via UMW Alerts.

The UMW Police Department, the Office of Emergency Management, the vice president for administration and finance, vice president for student affairs and the Office of University Communications may provide input or assistance with issuing a timely warning or immediate notification.

In the event of an emergency that requires the employees or student body be notified, the University will activate the UMW EANS. This is a multi-tiered approach utilizing a combination of text messaging, area warning (speaker array), email, phones, and University website alerts. An emergency alert will notify the campus community about the location and nature of the emergency and what steps need to be taken.

UMW Alerts is a n auto -subscribed emergency alert system that can be sent to cellphones, email, SMS messaging devices, and landline telephones. It's an opt-out system. This system is available to UMW employees and students, along with emergency contacts such as parents and family, local citizens and alumni. The area warning system consists of nine speaker arrays on the Fredericksburg, Stafford and Dahlgren campuses. This system, which employs both tones and spoken voice, is a warning system for those located outdoors when an emergency arises.
